Breaking into the tech industry can feel daunting, especially for those without a traditional technical background. That’s why we have created the Voices in Data and Tech series – to showcase the stories of diverse people in the industry, whether you’re exploring a similar career path or simply curious about the people behind the tech.
In this edition of Voices in Data and Tech, we meet Devina Moore, a DevOps apprentice at Modular Data. Devina shares her path from studying business and economics, navigating the tech landscape through bootcamps and internships to now thriving in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Tell us a bit about you
I started my career in retail whilst studying at university. I studied business & economics, later followed with MSc in Fintech, where I gained an interest in tech but wasn’t sure where to start. Having no idea of exactly what career path to follow I joined a cloud computing bootcamp followed by completing a DevOps internship. In my role as an apprentice, I am privileged with to explore a range of DevOps tools and develop the skills whilst learning.
What do you do at Modular Data?
I am a DevOps apprentice at Modular Data, working closely with the DevOps engineering team. My role involves learning, shadowing, and developing the skills needed to effectively support our developers, including selecting and implementing a range of tools.
What made you want to join Modular Data?
I was drawn to the strong values held by the team at Modular Data and their strong belief in the company’s vision. As someone from a non-technical background, I was initially nervous about joining the team, but every member encouraged me to seize the opportunity. From my very first interaction, I felt welcomed and comfortable. The C-suite’s impressive track record and their warm, supportive approach made me feel valued right from the start.
What do you particularly enjoy about your job?
I adore the culture at Modular Data being inclusive and supportive; even at the very start of my career, I never feel insignificant. I feel valued and involved in projects that interest me, and I always have follow-up meetings to keep me on track. The team ensures that I am never left alone to navigate challenges, I never feel alone—if something is difficult, someone from the team is always happy to help. This supportive culture has been consistent from the beginning.
I love working with a range of senior tech team members and have the privilege of learning from some of the most talented people in the industry. Everyone is more than happy to help, and I have time to learn as well as share my insights with the team, especially in a male-dominated industry, without feeling uncomfortable or unheard. My manager constantly encourages me, providing reassurance and building my confidence in my work even when I have doubts.
What has been your biggest achievement in your role so far?
Getting involved with building some metric reports in terraform and recently building threat models. I am more than proud of the development I am making on this apprenticeship and the variety of skills sets that I am building. I am more confident to speak during standups and meetings. The team always allows me to share my ideas and thoughts during meetings. I cannot thank the team enough for cultivating this environment.
Where do you want to be in five years?
In 5 years’ time, I want to be leading a DevOps team at Modular Data.
